Samsung TV Has Sound but No Picture: Fix the Black Screen

When a Samsung TV plays sound over a black screen, Samsung's own troubleshooting starts with the Home button. If the menu appears, the TV is on and the fault sits in the source, the cable or the connected device. If the menu stays black too, the TV may have a power problem and need service.

Quick answer

When a Samsung TV plays sound over a black screen, press Home on the remote first. If the menu appears, the TV is powered on and the fault lies in the source, the cable or the connected device. If the menu stays black too, Samsung says the TV may have a power issue and need service.

  1. 1.Press Home (Menu) on the remote and check whether the TV menu shows up on the black screen.
  2. 2.If it does, set the TV source to the HDMI port your device is plugged into, make sure that device is on, and reconnect its cables one at a time at both ends.

What it means

Sound with no picture means the TV is on and playing audio while the screen stays black. Samsung's support article for this symptom says the issue could be with your external device. Samsung India splits it into three possible causes: a connection problem (which it calls the most common, often an improper installation or a bad cable), a video output setting on the connected device, or a fault in the TV itself.

The Home button tells these apart. If the menu appears, Samsung treats the TV as powered on and either set to the wrong source or not receiving a signal, so the work happens on the input side. If the menu does not appear either, Samsung US points to a power issue and Samsung India says the TV needs service. Before booking a repair in that case, see our guide on the black screen flashlight test, which covers what that check can and cannot prove.

On models with a One Connect box, every external device goes through the box and its One Connect cable, so those two parts are added to the checklist.

Common causes

  • Loose, damaged or misplaced cable. Samsung India calls the connection the most common issue: a cable that is loose, plugged into the wrong jack or damaged. A damaged cable has to be replaced.
  • Wrong source or the device is off. The TV can show a black screen when it is set to an input whose device is turned off, or to a different HDMI number than the one your cable box or console uses.
  • Video output setting on the connected device. Some devices have a switch, button or setting that turns their outputs on and off. If video output is off, the TV gets nothing to show.
  • One Connect cable or box. On TVs that use a One Connect box, a One Connect cable that is bent, broken, kinked, pinched or crushed under something heavy can cause problems, and a faulty box needs replacing.
  • A fault in the TV. If the Home menu does not appear, or there is still audio but no video after every swap, Samsung says the TV needs service.

Before you start

  • Make sure the external device (cable box, console, streaming device) is actually turned on.
  • Look at the back of the TV and note which HDMI number the device's cable is plugged into.
  • Check whether your TV has a One Connect box. If it does, your devices plug into the box, not the TV.

Fixes, from safest to last resort

1

Press Home to see whether the TV menu appears

  1. 1Press the Home (Menu) button on the remote.
  2. 2If the menu appears, the TV is powered on but is either on the wrong source or not receiving a signal. Continue with the next steps.
  3. 3If the menu does not appear, the TV may be having power issues. See our guide on a Samsung TV that won't turn on, and our guide on the black screen flashlight test, then skip to the support section below.

This is the first step in both Samsung US and Samsung India's troubleshooting for a TV with sound but no picture.

2

Set the TV to the same source as your device

  1. 1Find the HDMI number printed next to the port your device uses. For example, if your cable box is on HDMI 1, the TV has to be set to HDMI 1.
  2. 2Select that source on the TV.
  3. 3Make sure the external device is turned on, since a device that is off leaves the selected input black.
3

Reconnect the cables one at a time

  1. 1If the source is right and there is still no image, unplug and reconnect each cable one at a time, at both ends.
  2. 2Check that no cable is loose or attached to the wrong jack on the TV or on the device. Replace any cable that is damaged.
  3. 3After reconnecting the external device, turn it off and then back on.
4

Run the HDMI cable test

  1. 1Keep the TV on the HDMI source of the cable you want to test.
  2. 2On 2022 and later models: All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → HDMI Troubleshooting, then pick the HDMI connection and follow the instructions on screen.
  3. 3On previous models: Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis → Signal Information → HDMI Cable Test → Start Test.
  4. 4If the test says the cable is bad, replace the cable. Samsung notes that service is not required in that case.

The test is designed for HDMI cables shorter than 2 m (6 ft) and may not give accurate results on longer ones. Some models only get it after a software update and older models don't have it; if yours doesn't, or the device isn't connected by HDMI, skip this step.

5

Run the Picture Test

  1. 1On 2022 and later models: All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → Picture Test, select OK and watch the test image.
  2. 2On previous models: Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis → Picture Test, then follow the on-screen directions.
  3. 3Answer Yes if the picture looks normal, No if there is a problem, or Show again to view it a second time.

In Samsung's picture troubleshooting, a problem that does not appear in the Picture Test is put down to a bad cable or a connected device. A problem that does appear in it is a reason to request service.

6

Swap the device, the port and the cable

  1. 1Connect a different device to the same input. If the new device gives a picture, the original device is the problem.
  2. 2Try a different source port on the TV.
  3. 3If you couldn't run the HDMI cable test, swap in another cable as well.
  4. 4If the TV shows a picture in any other setup, the TV is ruled out. Keep changing one thing at a time until you find the device or cable that fails, then troubleshoot or replace it.
7

Check the One Connect cable and box (models that have one)

  1. 1Disconnect and firmly reconnect the One Connect cable at both ends (some models call it the Invisible Cable). Replace it if it is bent, broken, kinked, pinched or has something heavy on top of it.
  2. 2If the TV has its own power cord plugged into a wall outlet, disconnect the One Connect box by unplugging either its power cord or the One Connect cable.
  3. 3If anything appears on the TV (a message or a picture) with the box disconnected, the One Connect box needs to be replaced. If the TV is plugged in and on but shows no message, request service.
  4. 4Reconnect the One Connect box afterwards.

If your TV does not have a power cord connected directly to a wall outlet, skip the disconnect test.

8

Check the video output setting on the connected device

  1. 1Open the settings of the device connected to the TV (cable box, console, player).
  2. 2Look for a switch, button or setting that turns its outputs on and off, and make sure video output to the TV is enabled.
  3. 3Test the input again.

This changes a setting on the connected device only. It does not touch anything on the TV.

If a menu doesn't match your TV

  • Menu paths differ by model year: on 2022 and later TVs the tests sit under All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis; on older models Self Diagnosis is directly under Settings → Support.
  • If you can't find the HDMI cable test, your model may not have it (some get it only after a software update, older models never do). Use the cable and device swaps instead.
  • The One Connect box is only included with select Samsung TVs. If your devices plug straight into the TV, skip that step.

When to contact support

Request Samsung service if the Home menu never appears, if the TV is plugged in and on with the One Connect box disconnected but shows no message, if the Picture Test shows the problem, or if there is still audio but no video after every step above:

  • Have the TV's model code, software version and serial number ready when you call.
  • Tell support whether the Home menu appears. It separates a signal problem from a fault in the TV.
  • Mention the result of the HDMI cable test and of the device, port and cable swaps.
  • Don't open the back of the TV to look for the fault yourself. Leave internal repairs to Samsung service.

Frequently asked questions

Samsung TV black screen with sound: what should I check first?+

Press Home on the remote. If the menu appears, the TV is on and the issue is the source, the cable or the connected device, so match the source to the HDMI port and reconnect the cables. If the menu doesn't appear, Samsung says the TV may have a power issue and need service.

Why is my Samsung TV screen black but sound works?+

Samsung lists three possibilities: a connection problem such as a loose, damaged or wrongly plugged cable, a video output setting on the connected device, or a fault in the TV. A TV set to an input whose device is turned off also shows a black screen.

Is my Samsung TV broken if the screen is black but it has audio?+

Not necessarily. If the Home menu appears and another device or cable gives a picture, Samsung says you have ruled out the TV. Service is the answer when the menu never appears or the problem persists after every swap.

How do I fix a TV black screen with sound but no picture on a Samsung?+

Work through Samsung's order: Home menu check, correct source with the device turned on, reconnect each cable at both ends, the HDMI cable test, then a different device, port and cable. On One Connect models, also check the One Connect cable and box.

Can the One Connect box cause sound with no picture?+

Yes. On TVs that use one, a damaged One Connect cable or a faulty box can cause it. If your TV has its own power cord in the wall and shows a message or picture with the box disconnected, Samsung says the box needs to be replaced.

Does Samsung's HDMI cable test work with long cables?+

It is designed for cables shorter than 2 m (6 ft) and may not give accurate results on longer ones. If the test says the cable is bad, replace it; Samsung notes that service is not required.
