Samsung TV: No Sound Through HDMI ARC or eARC Soundbar

When a soundbar or AV receiver connected over HDMI ARC/eARC goes silent on a Samsung TV, the cause is almost always the handshake: wrong port, soundbar not on D.IN, Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) off, Sound Output not set to Receiver (HDMI), or an eARC/cable mismatch.

Quick answer

No sound over HDMI ARC is nearly always a handshake problem. Make sure the cable sits in the TV's HDMI port labeled ARC/eARC and the soundbar's HDMI OUT (TV-ARC) port, set the soundbar to D.IN, and check the two key TV settings.

  1. 1.Set the soundbar's source to D.IN — when the ARC handshake works, its display switches to 'TV ARC' by itself.
  2. 2.On the TV: Settings → General → External Device Manager → Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) → On, then Settings → Sound → Sound Output → Receiver (HDMI).

What it means

HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) lets the TV send its audio back down the same HDMI cable to a soundbar or receiver. eARC is the newer, higher-bandwidth version that carries lossless formats like Dolby Atmos over TrueHD.

For ARC to work on a Samsung TV, three things must line up: the cable must be in the specific HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC (on both devices), Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) must be on, and the TV's Sound Output must point at the receiver. If any one of them is off, you get picture but silence.

Because the audio path depends on this CEC handshake, most 'no sound' cases are fixed by redoing the handshake — reseating the cable, power cycling, or correcting a setting — not by replacing hardware.

Common causes

  • Cable in the wrong HDMI port. ARC only works on the TV port labeled ARC or eARC and the soundbar's HDMI OUT (TV-ARC) port. Any other HDMI port carries video in, not audio out.
  • Soundbar not on the D.IN source. Samsung soundbars need the D.IN source for ARC; the display should switch to 'TV ARC' on its own once the link is up.
  • Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) turned off. ARC rides on HDMI-CEC. If Anynet+ is off on the TV, the handshake never happens.
  • Sound Output not set to Receiver (HDMI). If the TV's output is still set to TV Speaker, the audio never leaves the TV.
  • eARC or audio-format mismatch. An eARC mode set wrong, a cable without enough bandwidth, or a receiver that can't decode the format the TV sends (e.g. Dolby Digital+) can all produce silence.
  • Stale CEC handshake or old firmware. A glitched CEC state after standby, or outdated TV/soundbar firmware, can drop the audio until devices are power cycled or updated.

Before you start

  • Confirm the TV port really says ARC or eARC next to the HDMI number — on most Samsung TVs only one port supports it.
  • Check the soundbar's own volume and mute; it sounds obvious, but a muted bar looks identical to a failed handshake.
  • If you have an optical cable handy, note that it can serve as a quick cross-check later: sound over optical but not over HDMI points squarely at the ARC/CEC path.

Fixes, from safest to last resort

1

Reseat the cable in the correct ports and select D.IN

  1. 1Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends and plug it back firmly: TV side into the HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC, soundbar side into HDMI OUT (TV-ARC / eARC).
  2. 2On the soundbar, press Source until it shows D.IN.
  3. 3Turn the TV on and wait a few seconds — if the handshake succeeds, the soundbar display changes to 'TV ARC' and sound returns.

If the display never switches from D.IN to TV ARC, the handshake is failing — keep going with the next steps.

2

Power cycle the TV and the soundbar

  1. 1Unplug both the TV and the soundbar from the wall.
  2. 2Wait 60 seconds so both fully power down.
  3. 3Plug the soundbar in first, then the TV, and test again.

This forces a fresh HDMI-CEC handshake, which clears the very common 'it worked yesterday' case.

3

Try a different HDMI cable

  1. 1Swap in another HDMI cable — for ARC any High Speed (HDMI 1.4 or later) cable works; for eARC use a cable with Ethernet (HEC/HEAC) or an Ultra High Speed cable.
  2. 2Route it between the same two ARC-labeled ports.
  3. 3Test the sound again.

Samsung's own eARC troubleshooting says to replace the cable when the soundbar never switches to TV ARC — damaged or low-bandwidth cables are a frequent silent culprit.

4

Turn on Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC)

  1. 1Open Settings → General → External Device Manager → Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC).
  2. 2Set it to On (if it's already on, toggle it off and on to refresh the handshake).
  3. 3Test the sound.

On newer models the path is Settings → All Settings → Connection → External Device Manager → Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC).

5

Set the TV's Sound Output to the receiver

  1. 1Open Settings → Sound → Sound Output.
  2. 2Select Receiver (HDMI) — or your soundbar's name if it appears in the list.
  3. 3Play something with audio and check the bar.

After a power outage or an input change, some TVs quietly fall back to TV Speaker — worth rechecking even if you set it once.

6

Set HDMI-eARC Mode to Auto

  1. 1Open Settings → All Settings → Sound → Expert Settings → HDMI-eARC Mode.
  2. 2Set it to Auto.
  3. 3Power cycle both devices once more and test.

This option only appears on eARC-capable TVs. Both the TV and the soundbar must support eARC to use it; an ARC-only soundbar still works through the same port using regular ARC.

7

Test with Digital Output Audio Format set to PCM

  1. 1Open Settings → All Settings → Sound → Expert Settings → Digital Output Audio Format.
  2. 2Switch it to PCM and test the sound.
  3. 3If PCM plays but Auto/Pass-through doesn't, your soundbar or receiver can't decode the format the TV was sending — leave PCM on, or check the receiver's supported formats and firmware.

PCM is uncompressed stereo, so it's a diagnostic more than a final setting for surround setups — but it isolates format problems instantly.

8

Update the TV firmware

  1. 1Go to Settings → Support → Software Update → Update Now.
  2. 2Also check for soundbar firmware updates (many Samsung soundbars update through the SmartThings app or USB).
  3. 3Restart both devices after updating.
9

Reset the soundbar (last resort)

  1. 1Turn the soundbar off.
  2. 2Press and hold the reset combination until INIT appears on its display — on many Samsung soundbars this is holding Volume + and Volume − for more than 5 seconds, but the exact buttons vary by model, so check your manual.
  3. 3Turn the TV and the soundbar back on, reselect D.IN and redo the settings above.

⚠ Resetting the soundbar wipes its settings, sound-mode choices and Bluetooth pairings. It does not affect the TV. Use it only after every step above has failed.

If a menu doesn't match your TV

  • Menu names vary by model year: External Device Manager lives under Settings → General on most Tizen TVs and under Settings → All Settings → Connection on newer ones.
  • If no HDMI port on the TV is labeled ARC or eARC, that model may not support ARC — check the spec sheet; an optical cable is the standard alternative.
  • If HDMI-eARC Mode doesn't exist in Expert Settings, the TV is ARC-only; regular ARC still carries Dolby Digital to the soundbar.

When to contact support

Contact Samsung support if the soundbar stays silent after the reset, or if sound works over optical but never over the ARC port — that can indicate a fault in the TV's HDMI (ARC) port or board:

  • Have both model numbers ready: the TV (Settings → Support → About This TV) and the soundbar.
  • Say explicitly whether the soundbar's display ever switches from D.IN to TV ARC — that tells support whether the CEC handshake starts at all.
  • Mention the steps you've done: cable swap, Anynet+ toggle, eARC mode, PCM test and the soundbar reset.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between HDMI ARC and eARC?+

ARC sends compressed audio (up to Dolby Digital / DD+) back to the soundbar over the HDMI cable. eARC has far more bandwidth and carries lossless formats like Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Atmos. eARC needs support on both the TV and the soundbar, plus an HDMI cable with Ethernet or an Ultra High Speed cable.

Do I really need Anynet+ turned on for ARC?+

Yes. ARC negotiates over HDMI-CEC, which Samsung calls Anynet+. With it off, the TV and soundbar can't complete the handshake, so no audio flows even with everything wired correctly.

Why does the sound come back only after I unplug everything?+

The HDMI-CEC handshake can get stuck, often after standby or switching inputs. A full power cycle forces a fresh handshake. If you need to do it constantly, update the firmware on both devices and try a better HDMI cable.

Sound works with an optical cable but not through ARC — what does that mean?+

The soundbar itself is fine; the problem is in the ARC path: the port, the cable, Anynet+/eARC settings, or in the worst case the TV's ARC port hardware. Walk through the solutions in order, and if ARC never works, contact Samsung about the port.
