Android TV is Google's smart TV operating system, used for years by Sony, Philips and Xiaomi TVs as well as boxes like the NVIDIA Shield TV and Xiaomi Mi Box. Newer devices ship with the Google TV interface instead, but it runs on the same Android TV OS underneath, so most fixes apply to both. The usual pain points are limited storage, apps that freeze, Play Store download failures and Bluetooth remote pairing.

Fire TV is Amazon's streaming platform, running the Android-based Fire OS on Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Cube streamers, Amazon's own Omni, 4-Series and 2-Series TVs, and Fire TV Edition sets from Toshiba and Insignia. Alexa voice control and the Amazon Appstore are built in. The most common complaints are apps crashing, low-storage warnings and remotes that stop pairing.

Google TV is Google's current smart TV experience: a recommendation-driven home screen that runs on top of Android TV OS. You'll find it on recent Sony Bravia, TCL, Hisense and Philips TVs, plus streamers like the Chromecast with Google TV and the Google TV Streamer. Most problems come down to a laggy home screen, apps that crash, casting failures, or the limited internal storage filling up.

Roku OS powers Roku streaming players like the Express, Streaming Stick and Ultra, plus Roku TVs built by TCL, Hisense, onn. and Roku itself. It's a closed, lightweight platform, so most failures are network-related and show up as numbered error codes such as 014 or 009 rather than app-specific messages. Restarting the Roku and the router clears a surprising share of them.

Tizen is the operating system on every Samsung Smart TV made since 2015, powering the Smart Hub launcher, the app store and SmartThings integration. It ships only on Samsung TVs and smart monitors, so Tizen problems and Samsung TV problems are largely the same thing. Most complaints involve apps that crash or vanish from Smart Hub, network errors such as 107 and 102, and gradual slowdown that a cache cleanup usually cures.

webOS is LG's smart TV operating system, recognizable by its horizontal app launcher and the point-and-click Magic Remote. It runs on every LG smart TV — OLED, QNED, NanoCell and UHD models — and LG also licenses it to other TV makers under the webOS Hub name. The usual trouble spots are Wi-Fi that keeps dropping, Magic Remote pairing, and apps that misbehave after a firmware update.
