Roku Error 014, 014.30 & 014.40: Can't Connect to Wi-Fi

Error 014 — and its 014.30 and 014.40 variants — means your Roku could not complete the connection to your wireless network. It's almost always credentials, signal or router configuration, and it's fixable without touching the hardware.

Quick answer

Error 014 (including the 014.30 and 014.40 variants) means your Roku couldn't complete the connection to your wireless network. Restarting both the Roku and the router fixes most cases; if not, re-enter your Wi-Fi password carefully — it's case-sensitive.

  1. 1.Restart the Roku (Settings → System → Power → System restart) and unplug your router for 60 seconds.
  2. 2.If it still fails, go to Settings → Network → Set up connection → Wireless and re-enter the network password exactly as it is — capitalization matters.

What it means

Error 014 appears when a Roku player or Roku TV can't complete the connection to your wireless network — either during initial setup or when a previously working connection drops. The suffixed variants 014.30 and 014.40 belong to the same family of failure, just at slightly different stages of the connection.

Roku doesn't publish an official meaning for each suffix. Based on Roku's own community threads and support cases, 014.30 usually shows up when the connection starts but can't complete — weak signal, router state — while 014.40 usually points at the credentials check failing: wrong password, wrong network, or the router refusing the device.

Because it's a network handshake problem, the fix lives in the connection itself — restarts, credentials, signal and router settings — not in the Roku hardware.

Common causes

  • Wrong network or password. The most common trigger, especially for 014.40. Roku passwords are case-sensitive, and dual-band routers that broadcast similar 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names make it easy to pick the wrong one.
  • Weak or unstable Wi-Fi signal. Typical of 014.30. Too much distance or interference between the router and the Roku means the connection starts but never completes.
  • Router state or configuration. A stale router cache, MAC address filtering, AP/client isolation or a 5 GHz-only network can all block the Roku from joining.
  • Temporary glitch after an update or outage. A Roku OS update or a brief ISP hiccup can leave the network stack in a bad state until the device restarts.

Before you start

  • Confirm another device (phone, laptop) can join the same Wi-Fi network right now — if it can't, the problem is your router or ISP, not the Roku.
  • Have the exact network name and password at hand, and double-check which network you're selecting. The password is case-sensitive.
  • Note whether the error appeared during first-time setup or on a connection that used to work — setup failures point harder at credentials or router settings.

Fixes, from safest to last resort

1

Restart your Roku device

  1. 1Press Home on the remote, then go to Settings → System → Power → System restart (on players without a Power menu: Settings → System → System restart).
  2. 2If you can't reach the menu, unplug the Roku from power, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in.
  3. 3Once it boots, retry the connection.

A restart clears the temporary state of the Wi-Fi hardware — it's Roku's own first recommendation for connection errors.

2

Restart your router and modem

  1. 1Unplug the power from both the modem and the router (if they're separate boxes).
  2. 2Wait about 60 seconds, plug the modem in first and let it fully boot, then plug in the router.
  3. 3When the router's lights are stable, retry the connection on the Roku.

This also clears the router's cached state, which several 014.30 reports point to as the culprit.

3

Improve the Wi-Fi signal

  1. 1Check the signal strength under Settings → Network → About, or run Settings → Network → Check connection.
  2. 2If the signal reads Poor or Fair, move the router and the Roku closer together and clear obstacles (thick walls, metal shelving, microwaves).
  3. 3For a Streaming Stick plugged in behind the TV, the TV panel itself can block reception — an HDMI extender cable that moves the stick away from the back of the TV often fixes it.
4

Reconnect with fresh credentials

  1. 1Go to Settings → Network → Set up connection → Wireless.
  2. 2Pick your network from the list — make sure it's the right one if your router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names.
  3. 3Type the password slowly and exactly. It's case-sensitive, and a single wrong character produces exactly this error — especially the 014.40 variant.

If your network doesn't appear in the list, scroll down and add it manually — hidden networks won't show up on their own.

5

Reset the network connection

  1. 1Go to Settings → System → Advanced system settings → Network connection reset → Reset connection.
  2. 2The Roku restarts and forgets every saved network.
  3. 3Set the connection up again from Settings → Network → Set up connection.

This wipes only network data. Your Roku account, channels and preferences stay untouched.

6

Check the router's settings

  1. 1Log in to your router's admin page and check whether MAC address filtering is enabled; if it is, add the Roku's MAC address (shown under Settings → Network → About) to the allowed list.
  2. 2Set the wireless mode to a mixed mode such as 802.11 b/g/n rather than a single-protocol setting.
  3. 3Turn off AP isolation / client isolation if enabled, and make sure you're not accidentally joining a guest network that blocks new devices.

Some older or entry-level Roku models only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. If your network is 5 GHz-only, enable the 2.4 GHz band on the router.

7

Factory reset the Roku (last resort)

  1. 1Only do this if everything above failed and other devices connect fine to the same network.
  2. 2Go to Settings → System → Advanced system settings → Factory reset and enter the code shown on screen.
  3. 3Set the Roku up from scratch and sign back in to your Roku account.

⚠ A factory reset erases all channels, sign-ins and preferences. Try every other step first.

If a menu doesn't match your TV

  • On Roku TVs the restart option is under Settings → System → Power → System restart; on streaming players without a Power menu it's directly under Settings → System → System restart.
  • Your Roku's MAC address (needed for router allow-lists) is under Settings → Network → About.

When to contact support

Contact Roku support if the device still won't connect after a network connection reset and a router check, while other devices join the same network normally:

  • Have the model and serial number ready (Settings → System → About).
  • Tell them the exact variant you see (014, 014.30 or 014.40) and whether it appears during setup or on a connection that used to work.
  • If every device in the house is struggling, contact your internet provider instead — the problem is upstream of the Roku.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between error 014, 014.30 and 014.40?+

They're all the same core failure — the Roku can't complete the connection to your wireless network. Roku doesn't officially document the suffixes, but in practice 014.30 tends to appear when the connection can't complete (weak signal, router state), while 014.40 tends to appear when the password or credentials check fails. The fixes overlap almost entirely, which is why this guide covers all three.

Will a network connection reset delete my channels?+

No. Settings → System → Advanced system settings → Network connection reset only clears saved Wi-Fi networks and connection data. Your Roku account, channels and settings stay. Only a full factory reset removes those.

The password is definitely right — why do I still get 014.40?+

Check that you're joining the right network name (dual-band routers often broadcast two similar ones), that MAC address filtering isn't blocking the Roku, and that the router isn't set to a single wireless mode or 5 GHz-only when your Roku model needs 2.4 GHz. A router reboot clears stale state that can also cause a correct password to be rejected.

My Roku shows a strong signal but still throws error 014 — how?+

Signal strength only measures how well the Roku hears the router. The error is about completing the connection, so wrong credentials, MAC filtering or router-side isolation settings will fail the handshake no matter how strong the signal is.
