Samsung TV App Won't Install or Open? Error 52028 and What to Try

Samsung's support pages treat an app that is freezing, not loading, missing or crashing with the same sequence: cold boot the TV, update its software, delete and reinstall the app, and reset Smart Hub last. Samsung Russia adds testing another Wi-Fi network, changing the DNS server and, when the TV runs out of memory, installing apps on a USB drive. The Samsung help pages used for this guide do not explain codes 52028 or 102028.

Quick answer

Samsung's help pages don't explain codes like 52028 or 102028, so use its general steps for an app that won't install or open: cold boot the TV, then delete and reinstall the app. If the TV says memory is full, install the app on a USB drive. Update the software and reset Smart Hub last.

  1. 1.Hold the Power button on the remote until the TV turns off and on again (about 5 seconds), or unplug the TV from the wall for 30 seconds.
  2. 2.On the Home screen open Apps, select the app, press and hold Enter (or Tools) on the remote and choose Reinstall.

What it means

Samsung US groups apps that are freezing, not loading, missing or crashing under one troubleshooting path: cold boot the TV, update the TV's software, delete the app and download it again, and lastly reset Smart Hub. Samsung Russia covers a single app that won't open or shows a black screen, and notes that the other apps should keep working normally. If every app fails, the problem is wider; see our guide on Samsung Smart Hub not working.

If the app won't install at all, check the message on screen. Samsung Russia explains that the TV's memory is limited, and that installing many apps or large apps can use up the space; the TV then shows an error saying there is not enough memory. On TVs from 2014 (H series) onward you can install apps on a USB drive instead.

Codes such as 52028 and 102028 appear in searches for Samsung TVs and for apps like YouTube. The Samsung support pages used for this guide do not say what those numbers mean, so this guide does not guess. The steps below are Samsung's own steps for an app that won't work.

Common causes

  • A frozen app or a temporary glitch. Samsung US says a cold boot, which fully shuts the TV down instead of putting it in standby, can solve issues with apps and glitches in the menu. Samsung Russia says opening another app and coming back clears the frozen app's cache.
  • Not enough memory on the TV. Samsung Russia says installing many apps or large apps can use up the TV's limited memory, and the TV then shows a not-enough-memory error.
  • Your internet provider blocking the app. Samsung Russia says an app may not work because the provider blocks the IP addresses the app connects to.
  • The DNS server. Samsung Russia links app problems to the DNS server and says a different DNS can make the connection more stable and reach services that fail with the standard settings.
  • Errors stored in the app or Smart Hub data. Samsung Russia says a Smart Hub reset deletes all app data and settings, and the errors with them.
  • Outdated TV software. Both Samsung US and Samsung Russia list updating the TV's software among the steps for an app that won't work.
  • Regional network limits. Samsung Russia warns that SmartThings, Smart Hub and some of their features may be unavailable or unstable in the region because of how networks work there and their possible technical restrictions.
  • A problem on the app's side. If nothing on the TV helps, Samsung Russia says to contact the app's developer.

Before you start

  • Open a different app. Samsung Russia says that when one app fails, the others should still work. If several apps fail, start with our Samsung Smart Hub guide.
  • Read the message on screen when the install fails. A not-enough-memory error points to the USB drive solution below.
  • Check that the TV is online. Samsung Russia recommends checking the network connection first.
  • Find your model code on the sticker on the TV. You need the model series for the Smart Hub reset steps, and in Russia the code ending shows whether the model is certified for Russia (see the warning in the Smart Hub reset step).

Fixes, from safest to last resort

1

If the app is frozen, switch apps and come back

  1. 1Open another app on the TV.
  2. 2Go back to the app that froze and try it again.

Samsung Russia says this clears the first app's cache so it can start working again.

2

Cold boot the TV

  1. 1With the remote: hold the Power button until the TV turns off and on again. Samsung US says this takes about 5 seconds.
  2. 2Without the remote: unplug the TV from the wall outlet or surge protector, wait, and plug it back in. Samsung US says 30 seconds; Samsung Russia says to leave it unplugged for 2 minutes.
  3. 3Open the app again, or try the install again.

Turning the TV off with the remote only puts it in standby. A cold boot shuts it down and restarts it. If you switch off a surge protector that also powers your router, give the router time to power up and reconnect before you test the TV.

3

Try another Wi-Fi network

  1. 1Turn your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot.
  2. 2Connect the TV to the hotspot.
  3. 3Open the app. If it works on the hotspot but not on your home network, the problem is on the network side.

Samsung Russia suggests this test because the provider may block the IP addresses the app connects to.

4

Delete and reinstall the app

  1. 1From the Home screen go to the Apps tab.
  2. 2Among the installed apps, select the one that doesn't work. Press and hold the Enter button (or Tools) on the remote to open the extra menu.
  3. 3Choose Reinstall.
  4. 4Wait for the reinstall to finish, then open the app.

Samsung Russia says the reinstall time depends on your internet speed. Samsung US words this step as deleting the app from the TV and downloading it again.

5

Install the app on a USB drive if the TV's memory is full

  1. 1Connect a USB flash drive to the TV. The ports are usually on the back panel; your user manual, on Samsung's Manuals & Downloads page, shows where they are on your model.
  2. 2Find the app you want and select Install.
  3. 3In the window that appears, choose the USB drive as the install location.
  4. 4Wait for the install to finish. The app appears in your installed apps with a USB drive icon in the top right corner of its tile.

Samsung Russia says this works on TVs from 2014 (H series) onward, and only for apps installed onto the USB drive through Samsung Apps on the TV. Apps copied onto the flash drive from elsewhere won't install.

6

Change the DNS server

  1. 1Change the DNS server address in the TV's network settings. Our Samsung Smart Hub guide shows where that setting is.
  2. 2Open the app again.

Samsung Russia says a different DNS server can make the connection more stable and give access to services that fail with the standard internet settings.

7

Update the TV software

  1. 1Check whether new software is available for your TV and install it.
  2. 2If there is no new software, move on to the next step.
  3. 3After the update, open the app again.

If the update itself fails, see our guide on a Samsung TV that won't update, which covers updating by USB.

8

Reset Smart Hub

  1. 1Only do this if everything above failed.
  2. 2Open Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis (Device Care on some models) → Reset Smart Hub.
  3. 3Enter the TV's PIN. Samsung Russia says the default is 0000. Wait for the reset to finish.
  4. 4On B, C, D and F series TVs (2022-2025), leave the menu, go to the Home screen and choose to set up Smart Hub now on the setup panel. On J, K, M, N, R, T and A series TVs (2015-2021), go to the Home screen and select the Apps panel; when the setup window appears, select OK.
  5. 5Accept the terms, sign in to your Samsung account or skip it, then reinstall the apps you want from the Apps tab.
  6. 6Before you open any app, wait until all the preinstalled apps have finished downloading. Their icons should no longer look dimmed.

⚠ A Smart Hub reset deletes every app you downloaded, reinstalls the factory apps and erases all app data and settings. In Russia, check the factory sticker first: Samsung Russia says certified models have a model code ending in XRU and the EAC mark, and that on a model not certified for Russia Smart Hub may become blocked after the reset.

9

Factory reset the TV (last resort)

  1. 1Only do this if the Smart Hub reset and the software update did not help.
  2. 2Run the TV's factory reset. The menu varies by model; our Samsung Smart Hub guide and your TV's e-manual show where it is.
  3. 3Set the TV up again, reinstall the app and test it.

⚠ A factory reset returns the TV to its factory state: everything you changed or installed since you set it up is lost. In Russia, the same XRU and EAC check applies: Samsung Russia says that on a model not certified for Russia, Smart Hub may become blocked after the reset.

If a menu doesn't match your TV

  • Menus differ by model, year and software version, and Samsung Russia notes that screens may look different from its screenshots. The reinstall menu opens by holding Enter on some remotes and Tools on others.
  • The Smart Hub reset sits under Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis on some TVs and under Device Care on others.
  • Button and menu names in the reinstall and Smart Hub reset steps are translated from Samsung's Russian page. Your TV's English menus may word them slightly differently.
  • If the app doesn't appear in Samsung Apps at all, Samsung Russia covers that case in a separate article; this guide does not cover it.
  • Samsung's pages used here don't give menu paths for the software update, the DNS setting or the factory reset. Use our linked guides or your TV's e-manual.

When to contact support

If only one app still fails after every step above, Samsung Russia says to contact the app's developer. If several apps fail, contact Samsung support.

  • To find the developer's contact: search for the app in Samsung Apps, open its detailed description and select the on-screen button with three dots. The developer's website or email is usually listed there.
  • Samsung US offers online chat with an expert and support through the Samsung Members app. Samsung Russia offers chat, phone support and service centres.
  • Have your TV model code ready, the exact error message or code on screen (for example 52028 or 102028), and the steps you have already tried: cold boot, another Wi-Fi network, reinstall, USB install, DNS, software update and Smart Hub reset.

Frequently asked questions

Samsung TV error code 52028: how to fix it?+

Work through Samsung's steps for an app that won't work: cold boot the TV (hold Power for about 5 seconds, or unplug it), reinstall the app from the Apps tab, test it on a phone hotspot, change the DNS server, update the TV software and, last, reset Smart Hub. Samsung's help pages used for this guide don't publish a separate fix for 52028.

What does error code 52028 mean on a Samsung smart TV?+

The Samsung support pages used for this guide don't explain 52028 or 102028, so we don't give it a meaning. Treat it as an app that won't load or install and follow the steps above. If it keeps appearing in one app only, contact that app's developer.

Samsung TV app won't install: is the TV out of memory?+

It can be. Samsung Russia says the TV's memory is limited, and installing many or large apps can fill it; the TV then shows a not-enough-memory error. On TVs from 2014 (H series) onward you can choose a USB drive as the install location when you select Install.

YouTube error code 52028 on my Samsung TV: is it YouTube or the TV?+

Open other apps. Samsung Russia says that when a single app fails, the others should work, which points to that app. Reinstall it, try another Wi-Fi network and, if nothing helps, contact the developer through the app's description in Samsung Apps. If every app fails, the problem is Smart Hub or the network.

Does resetting Smart Hub delete my apps?+

Yes. Samsung Russia says a Smart Hub reset deletes all downloaded apps, reinstalls the factory apps and erases all app data and settings. You will need the TV's PIN (0000 by default) and you reinstall your apps afterwards.

Why does the app work on my phone's hotspot but not on my home Wi-Fi?+

Samsung Russia says an app can fail because the internet provider blocks the IP addresses it connects to. A different DNS server may help, because Samsung says it can give access to services that fail with the standard settings.

Can I copy an app to a USB stick on my computer and install it on the TV?+

No. Samsung Russia says apps loaded onto a flash drive from elsewhere won't install. Only apps installed onto the USB drive through Samsung Apps on the TV will run.
