Roku Error Code 018: How to Fix Slow Streaming
Error 018 means your Roku is connected to the network but the internet speed reaching it is too slow to stream — a bandwidth or Wi-Fi issue, not a broken device.
Quick answer
Error 018 means the internet is reaching your Roku but too slowly to stream. In most cases restarting the Roku and your router restores the speed.
- 1.Go to Settings → System → System restart and let the Roku reboot.
- 2.Unplug your router and modem for 60 seconds, plug them back in, then reconnect.
What it means
Error 018 appears when your Roku is connected to your home network but the internet speed actually reaching it is too low to stream smoothly.
It's a bandwidth and signal problem on the network side — your router, Wi-Fi signal or internet plan — not a sign that the Roku itself is faulty.
Common causes
- Slow internet plan. The speed coming from your provider is below what streaming needs — Roku suggests about 3.0 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K.
- Weak Wi-Fi signal. The Roku is too far from the router or blocked by walls, so the real speed reaching it drops well below your plan's rate.
- Network congestion. Other devices downloading, gaming or streaming at the same time use up the bandwidth the Roku needs.
- Router or modem needs a restart. After days of uptime a router can throttle or drop throughput until it's power cycled.
Before you start
- Run a speed test on another device on the same Wi-Fi — Roku needs about 3.0 Mbps for HD and roughly 25 Mbps for 4K.
- Check whether the slowdown hits every app or just one — a single app may be having its own outage.
- Note if other devices on the same network are also buffering, which points to the router or ISP rather than the Roku.
Fixes, from safest to last resort
Restart your Roku
No data loss- 1On a Roku player, go to Settings → System → System restart and select Restart.
- 2On a Roku TV, go to Settings → System → Power → System restart.
- 3Wait for the Roku to fully reboot, then reopen your streaming app.
A restart clears the Roku's memory and re-establishes the Wi-Fi connection, which often restores full speed.
Power cycle your router and modem
No data loss- 1Unplug both your modem and router (or your combined gateway) from power.
- 2Wait a full 60 seconds so they reset completely.
- 3Plug the modem back in first, wait for its lights to stabilise, then power the router and retry on the Roku.
Routers slow down after long uptime; a power cycle usually restores throughput.
Strengthen the connection
No data loss- 1Check your signal on the Roku: Settings → Network → About shows Signal strength and your connection status.
- 2Move the Roku (or its router) so fewer walls sit between them, and switch to the 5 GHz band if your router offers one.
- 3For the most stable speed, connect the Roku to the router with an Ethernet cable if your model has a LAN port (Ultra and most Roku TVs).
A wired connection bypasses Wi-Fi entirely and is the single most reliable fix for 018.
Reduce congestion and lower stream quality
Re-setup needed- 1Pause large downloads, cloud backups or game updates on other devices while you stream.
- 2Disconnect devices you're not using from the Wi-Fi to free up bandwidth.
- 3In the streaming app (Netflix, YouTube and so on), lower the playback quality to Auto or a lower resolution so it fits your available speed.
Streaming quality settings live inside each app, not in Roku's system menu.
Change your router's DNS to 8.8.8.8
Re-setup needed- 1Open your router's admin page (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in a browser) and sign in.
- 2Find the DNS settings and set the primary DNS to 8.8.8.8 and the secondary to 8.8.4.4 (Google DNS), then save and reboot the router.
- 3Restart the Roku and retry your stream.
Roku has no on-device DNS setting, so this is done at the router. It won't raise your raw speed, but it can smooth routing and cut buffering on some connections.
8.8.8.8Factory reset your Roku (last resort)
Removes apps & settings- 1Only if 018 persists after every step above and your speed test confirms enough bandwidth.
- 2Go to Settings → System → Advanced system settings → Factory reset and enter the on-screen code.
- 3Set the Roku up again, reconnect to Wi-Fi and sign back into your apps.
⚠ A factory reset erases all your channels, logins and preferences and returns the Roku to out-of-box state. Try everything else first.
If a menu doesn't match your TV
- Menu names vary slightly between Roku players and Roku TVs, but the network tools always live under Settings → Network on every model.
- On Roku TVs from TCL, Hisense or onn. the restart option may sit under Settings → System → Power; if the menu is unresponsive, unplug the TV directly for 60 seconds instead.
When to contact support
Contact Roku support if 018 keeps returning after a restart and your speed test shows enough bandwidth, or reach out to your internet provider if the measured speed itself is too low:
- Have your Roku model and software version ready (Settings → System → About).
- Tell them the speed you measured and whether other devices stream fine on the same network.
- Ask your ISP to check the line speed and for any throttling or outages in your area.

Frequently asked questions
Does Roku error 018 mean my device is broken?+
No. 018 is a speed warning — your internet is connected but too slow to stream right now. It's fixed on the network side (restart, Wi-Fi, ISP), not by repairing the Roku.
How much internet speed does a Roku need?+
Roku recommends roughly 3.0 Mbps for standard HD streaming and about 25 Mbps for 4K/HDR. If your measured speed is below that, you'll see slowdowns and 018.
Why do I only get 018 in the evening?+
That's usually network congestion — your household or your ISP's local network is busiest at peak hours. A wired connection or the 5 GHz band helps most.
