Roku Error Code 009: How to Fix It

Error code 009 means your Roku joined your Wi-Fi but couldn't reach the wider internet — almost always a router, ISP or DNS issue, not a broken player.

Quick answer

Error 009 is a connection fault between your Roku and the internet — the player sees the router but nothing gets through. Restarting both the Roku and the router often fixes it.

  1. 1.Restart the Roku: Settings → System → Power → System restart (or Settings → System → System restart on sticks and players).
  2. 2.Unplug your router and modem for 60 seconds, plug them back in, wait for the lights to settle, then retry.

What it means

Error code 009 appears when your Roku connected to your home Wi-Fi but couldn't reach the wider internet — the router is there, but data isn't getting through to load the app or finish setup.

Because the fault is almost always on the network side — router, modem, your internet provider or DNS — the fix is about refreshing the connection, not replacing the Roku.

Common causes

  • Router or modem lost its internet connection. The most common cause: your router still broadcasts Wi-Fi, but the link to your internet provider dropped and needs a refresh.
  • Internet provider (ISP) outage. Your provider's service is temporarily down in your area, so nothing on your network can reach the internet.
  • Wrong Wi-Fi network selected. During setup the Roku joined a neighbour's network, a guest network with no internet, or a band that isn't online.
  • Router settings blocking the Roku. MAC filtering, an over-strict firewall, or a full DHCP client list can stop the Roku from getting online even with a strong signal.

Before you start

  • Test another device (phone, laptop) on the same Wi-Fi — if it also has no internet, the problem is your router or ISP, not the Roku.
  • Check your router and modem lights, and confirm your provider isn't reporting a local outage.
  • Note whether 009 started during first-time setup (points to the wrong network) or on a Roku that was working fine before (points to the router).

Fixes, from safest to last resort

1

Restart the Roku

  1. 1Go to Settings → System → Power → System restart and select Restart.
  2. 2On Roku sticks and streaming players without a Power menu, use Settings → System → System restart instead.
  3. 3Wait for the Roku to fully reboot, then try to connect again.

This re-initialises the Roku's network stack and clears a temporary connection glitch — it often resolves 009 on its own.

2

Reboot your router and modem

  1. 1Unplug the power from both your router and modem (or the single gateway box if they're combined).
  2. 2Wait a full 60 seconds so they clear completely.
  3. 3Plug the modem back in first, let it come fully online, then power the router back on.
  4. 4Once all the lights are steady, retry the connection on the Roku.

If your other devices also had no internet in the precheck, this is the step that most often brings everything back.

3

Reconnect to the correct Wi-Fi network

  1. 1Go to Settings → Network → Set up connection → Wireless.
  2. 2Let the Roku scan, then pick your own network — not a guest or neighbour's network — and re-enter the password.
  3. 3If your router shows a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz name, try the 2.4 GHz one; it reaches further and is more stable for streaming devices.

You can confirm what the Roku is joined to under Settings → Network → About. This is the fix when 009 appears during setup.

4

Reset the network connection

  1. 1Go to Settings → System → Advanced system settings → Network connection reset.
  2. 2Select Reset connection and let the Roku restart.
  3. 3Set up your Wi-Fi again from scratch and enter the password.

This clears the Roku's saved network configuration and forces a clean reconnection. It does not remove your channels, logins or Roku account.

5

Change your router's DNS to 8.8.8.8

  1. 1Roku has no DNS field on the device, so this is done in your router. Open your router admin page in a browser (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and sign in.
  2. 2Find the DNS settings (often under Internet, WAN or DHCP) and set the primary DNS to 8.8.8.8 and the secondary to 8.8.4.4 (Google DNS).
  3. 3Save, reboot the router, then restart the Roku and retry.

Useful when your provider's DNS is failing to resolve Roku or app servers. This affects every device on the network, so revert it if anything else misbehaves.

6

Factory reset the Roku (last resort)

  1. 1Only do this if every step above failed and other devices clearly have internet.
  2. 2Go to Settings → System → Advanced system settings → Factory reset and confirm with the on-screen code.
  3. 3If the menu is unreachable, use the physical reset button on the device (hold it ~20 seconds until the light flashes).
  4. 4Set the Roku up again and reconnect to Wi-Fi.

⚠ A factory reset erases all your channels, logins, settings and preferences, and re-links the device to your Roku account. Try everything else first.

If a menu doesn't match your TV

  • On Roku streaming sticks and players without a Power submenu, the restart path is Settings → System → System restart (no Power step).
  • Menu wording varies slightly by Roku OS version and by Roku TV brand (TCL, Hisense, Onn, Sharp), but the Settings → Network and Settings → System → Advanced system settings paths are the same across models.

When to contact support

Contact Roku support if 009 persists after a network reset and reboot, and other devices on the same Wi-Fi clearly have internet:

  • Have your device details ready (Settings → System → About shows the model and software version).
  • Mention which steps you already tried, especially the network connection reset and the router reboot.
  • Ask them to confirm there's no known outage for your region or for the specific channel that fails.

Frequently asked questions

Does error 009 mean my Roku is broken?+

Almost never. It's a connection error between the Roku and the internet, so it's fixed on the network side (restart the Roku, reboot the router, reset the connection) rather than by replacing the device.

I get 009 during setup — what does that mean?+

You most likely picked the wrong Wi-Fi network, or the network you joined has no internet. Re-run Settings → Network → Set up connection → Wireless, choose your own network, and confirm another device on that Wi-Fi can browse.

Can I set a custom DNS directly on the Roku?+

No. Roku has no on-device DNS field, so you change DNS in your router settings (set 8.8.8.8 as the primary), save, reboot the router, and then restart the Roku.
