Optical vs HDMI ARC vs eARC: Decide by What Your TV Has

Most comparisons rank these three connections and stop there. That ranking is useless if your television doesn't have the port at the top of it. Here's the decision made the practical way — by what is physically on the back of your TV and your soundbar.

Almost every comparison of these three connections opens by ranking them: eARC beats ARC, ARC beats optical. That ranking is accurate and largely useless, because you cannot connect to a port your television does not have.

The decision is really a two-branch one, and you settle it by walking round the back of the TV rather than reading a specification.

Branch one: there is an HDMI port with the word ARC or eARC printed beside it. Use that port. It carries more audio formats than optical, and it lets the TV remote change the soundbar's volume — which is the difference most people actually notice day to day.

Branch two: none of the HDMI ports carry either label. Optical stops being the worse option and becomes the correct one. ARC and eARC both send audio upstream from the TV to the soundbar over the same HDMI cable that would normally carry video downstream, which is why no separate audio cable is needed.

How to find out what your TV actually has

The labelling is printed on the TV chassis itself, in small text beside or beneath each HDMI socket. On wall-mounted sets this is the hard part: some ports face sideways and some face downwards, and the downward-facing bank is often where the ARC port hides. A phone camera held against the panel, or a torch, beats guessing.

If the printing is worn or unreadable, the TV's own menus are the next place to look. The audio output section of the settings lists the outputs the set believes it has — if an HDMI audio output or an ARC option appears there, the hardware exists and you only need to find which socket it belongs to.

To check the manual, you need the model reference rather than the marketing name. On the soundbar side, the socket that goes to the television is usually its HDMI OUT — often printed as TV, TV ARC or TV eARC — not one of its HDMI inputs. Its inputs are for source devices passing through.

The port question and the cable question are different

These two get merged constantly, and merging them is why people buy a cable that does not fix anything.

The port question is about which socket the cable goes into. Because only one HDMI port on the TV typically carries the return channel, plugging into a neighbouring port gives you an ordinary HDMI input — a socket that expects audio and video to arrive, not to leave. Nothing about that failure looks like a cable fault. There is simply silence, and the soundbar sits there showing no incoming signal.

The cable question is about what runs between those two correctly chosen sockets. It only becomes relevant once the ports are right.

So work in that order. Confirm the labelled port on the TV, confirm the TV-facing socket on the soundbar, and only then start wondering about the cable.

Does eARC need a special HDMI cable?

This is the point where sources openly contradict each other, so here is the honest position rather than a confident one.

HDMI's own eARC documentation describes the formats and the ease-of-use benefits, and does not state that any particular cable type is required. Its cable resource lists several categories — Ultra High Speed, Premium High Speed, High Speed and Standard, each in variants with and without Ethernet — and does not designate any one of them as the eARC cable.

What that list does make explicit is which cables carry the HDMI Ethernet Channel: the variants named "with Ethernet" include a dedicated additional data channel, and the ones without that suffix do not. This is the technical detail behind the widespread advice to use a cable with Ethernet, and it is why the advice is neither pure myth nor a universal rule.

The practical answer is conditional. Start with the cable you already have, because a modern HDMI cable frequently works. If your soundbar's manual specifies a cable type for eARC, follow the manual — that instruction is specific to your hardware and outranks any general guidance. And if the link connects but the formats you expected never arrive, the cable becomes a reasonable thing to swap, rather than the first thing.

Before you buy anything

Check your soundbar's manual for a stated cable requirement before ordering. Where a requirement exists it is usually for a cable that includes the Ethernet channel, or an Ultra High Speed cable, and it will be written down in the documentation for that specific model.

When optical is the right answer, not the consolation prize

Manufacturer blogs tend to treat optical as legacy, which quietly abandons a large number of readers. There are several situations where it is the sensible choice even when an alternative exists.

The obvious one is a television that predates the return channel entirely. If no port carries the label, this is not a decision — it is the connection you have, and it will drive a soundbar perfectly well for everyday viewing.

Then there is the HDMI control problem. ARC and eARC depend on CEC, the feature that lets devices command one another over HDMI. That is exactly what gives you TV-remote volume control, but it also produces the behaviour where the soundbar wakes up, switches inputs or powers off on its own. Optical carries no control channel at all, so it sidesteps that entire class of annoyance. You trade the convenience for the predictability.

Optical is also electrically isolated, since the signal travels as light rather than current. That means it cannot pass a ground loop between TV and soundbar, which is occasionally the difference between clean audio and a persistent mains hum.

And there is the simple case of a damaged or occupied port. If the one ARC socket on the set has failed, optical restores sound without replacing the television.

Optical connected but no sound: what to check

  • The protective caps are off both ends

    Optical cables ship with small plastic plugs over the tips. They look like part of the connector and are easy to miss.

  • Both plugs are fully seated

    A correctly inserted optical plug usually seats with a small click. Held loosely against the socket, it looks connected and transmits nothing.

  • The TV's sound output is switched away from the internal speakers

    In the TV's audio settings, the output has to be pointed at the optical or external audio device option. If the output is still pointed at the internal speakers, nothing is sent down the optical link at all.

  • The soundbar is on its optical input

    Soundbars label this variously as OPT, OPTICAL or D.IN. Cycle its source button until the display confirms the optical input rather than assuming it switched automatically.

  • The digital output format matches what the soundbar can decode

    Your TV's audio menu offers a format setting, often with a PCM option and one or more bitstream options. If the TV is sending a surround format the soundbar cannot decode, the result is silence rather than a warning. Setting the output to PCM tests whether that mismatch is the cause.

  • The fibre is intact

    Point one end at a pale surface in a dark room while the connection is active and look at the reflection rather than straight into the connector — a domestic TOSLINK output uses a low-power red LED, but it is not worth looking directly into any active fibre. A visible red glow means light is getting through. Optical fibre can break internally if the cable has been bent tightly or crushed behind furniture, with no visible damage outside.

Signs this connection will not give you what you wanted

These are the symptoms that mean the limitation is real rather than a setup mistake to keep chasing.

  • The soundbar's display names the incoming signal as stereo or PCM when you expected surround, and it does so on every source, not just one app.
  • Your TV's audio format menu greys out the surround or bitstream options while the connection is active — the set is telling you that path cannot carry them.
  • No HDMI port on the television carries an ARC or eARC label and the manual for that exact model reference confirms none exists. No cable or setting will create one.
  • Content you know is in Dolby Atmos plays normally but the soundbar's Atmos indicator never appears over a port labelled ARC, and your TV's audio output menu offers no format capable of carrying it — the format list HDMI documents for Dolby Atmos is the eARC one, so check that menu before concluding the setup is at fault.
  • Volume still does not follow the TV remote after HDMI control has been switched on in both the TV settings and the soundbar settings and both devices have been powered off and on again.

Bottom line

Choose by what you have. If a port says eARC and your soundbar has a matching socket, that is the connection with the widest format support and the fewest compromises. If a port says ARC, use it and enjoy the remote-controlled volume. If nothing says either, connect the optical cable without feeling short-changed — for the great majority of everyday television, the difference you will hear between optical and ARC is far smaller than the difference between the soundbar and your TV's built-in speakers.

If it is still silent, set the TV's digital output format to PCM — a surround format the soundbar cannot decode usually produces silence rather than an error.

Can I use HDMI ARC and optical at the same time?+

Generally no, in the sense that a television sends its audio to one output at a time and choosing one deselects the other in the audio menu. There is little reason to want both.
