LG TV Error Code 106: What It Means and How to Fix It

Error 106 on an LG TV comes with the message "Network is not connected. Check the network connection status." LG says it appears when the internet signal does not reach the TV. The fixes LG gives are on the network side: restart the router and TV, check the Wi-Fi password, set the DNS manually and change the Wi-Fi band or channel.

Quick answer

LG error 106 means the internet signal is not reaching your TV; the screen says "Network is not connected. Check the network connection status." Check that other devices are online, restart the router and the TV, then set the DNS to 8.8.8.8 or move the TV to a different Wi-Fi band.

  1. 1.Restart your Wi-Fi router and the TV, reconnect and make sure the Wi-Fi password is typed correctly.
  2. 2.Still failing? Go to Settings → Network → Wi-Fi Connection → Advanced Settings → Edit, untick Automatically, enter 8.8.8.8 as the DNS and select Connect.

What it means

Error 106 on an LG TV comes with the message "Network is not connected. Check the network connection status." According to LG, it appears when the internet signal does not reach the TV. LG also says it can show up when the internet connection is unstable.

LG's own list of TV error codes describes 106 as a common error when the TV connects to the router, ties it to the 5 GHz band and recommends switching the router from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz. Its close relative, error 105, appears when there is no internet access or when the DNS address cannot be resolved, and LG fixes it with a restart and a manual DNS.

Every fix LG lists for 106 is done at home on the TV or the router. Only when none of them work does LG point you to an LG service centre, because the TV's Wi-Fi module may need replacing.

Common causes

  • Unstable internet or a router that needs a restart. LG says error 106 can appear when the internet connection is unstable, and its first fix is restarting the Wi-Fi router and the TV.
  • Connection on the 5 GHz band. LG's error-code list links 106 to the 5 GHz frequency and tells you to switch the router from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz.
  • Wrong DNS settings. If restarting doesn't help, LG says the error can come from incorrectly selected DNS settings, which you can fix in the TV's network menu.
  • Wrong Wi-Fi password. When the TV reconnects it may ask for the Wi-Fi password again. A typo there keeps the TV off the network.
  • Weak reception at the TV. LG suggests moving the router closer to the TV for better reception.
  • The TV has no built-in Wi-Fi. A TV without Smart TV can't go online at all. A Smart TV without a Wi-Fi module needs a cable, an extra router (repeater) or, on models that support it, LG's USB Wi-Fi receiver.
  • Faulty Wi-Fi module. If none of the methods work, LG says the Wi-Fi module may need replacing at an LG service centre.

Before you start

  • Check whether your phone or laptop has internet on the same Wi-Fi. LG's restart advice applies when the network works on other devices.
  • Make sure your TV model has Wi-Fi. On LG's official site, a "-" next to Wi-Fi in the specs means there is no built-in adapter, "●" or "Yes" means it is built in, and "Ready" means it connects through an external LG adapter.
  • If the TV shows a message asking you to connect a cable or a Wi-Fi dongle, it is a model without built-in Wi-Fi.
  • If the TV connects but keeps dropping off later, see our guide on an LG TV that keeps disconnecting from Wi-Fi.

Fixes, from safest to last resort

1

Restart the router and the TV

  1. 1Restart your Wi-Fi router.
  2. 2Restart the TV.
  3. 3Reconnect the TV to Wi-Fi. If it asks for the password, check that it is entered correctly.

This is the first fix LG gives for error 106 once you know the network works on other devices.

2

Move the router closer to the TV

  1. 1Place the router closer to the TV for better reception.
  2. 2Reconnect the TV and check whether error 106 is gone.
3

Connect by cable or add LG's USB Wi-Fi receiver (TVs without built-in Wi-Fi)

  1. 1Check your model's specs on LG's official site to confirm whether it has built-in Wi-Fi.
  2. 2If it is a Smart TV without a Wi-Fi module, connect it with a network cable or through an extra router (repeater).
  3. 3If the TV supports LG's external receiver, plug the LG Wi-Fi receiver into the TV's USB port.

LG says a TV without Smart TV can't be connected to the internet by cable or by an external module.

4

Set the DNS manually to 8.8.8.8

  1. 1Open Settings on the TV (the gear button on the remote opens the settings menu) and choose Network.
  2. 2Go to Wi-Fi Connection and select Advanced Settings.
  3. 3Select Edit and untick Automatically.
  4. 4Enter 8.8.8.8 in the DNS field and select Connect.

LG gives the same DNS fix for error 105 and lists 8.8.4.4, another public Google server, as an alternative address.

Change the Wi-Fi band or channel on the router

  1. 1Open your router's settings. Section names differ between router models, but the steps are the same.
  2. 2If the TV is on 5 GHz, switch it to 2.4 GHz: this is what LG's error-code list recommends for 106.
  3. 3If the TV is on 2.4 GHz and supports 5 GHz, LG's error 106 article suggests trying 5 GHz instead: in Wireless → Wireless Settings, set Mode to mixed (b/g/n), Channel Width to Auto and Channel to 36, 40, 44 or 48.
  4. 4Save the settings and restart the router. Restart it after each change and test the TV again.

LG's two articles point in opposite directions on the band, so the useful move is to try the band the TV isn't using now.

If a menu doesn't match your TV

  • Router menus are named differently from model to model. Look for the wireless section (LG calls it Wireless and Wireless Settings) where the mode, channel width and channel are set.
  • If you can't find the TV's settings menu, press the gear button on the LG remote; from there go to Network and Wi-Fi Connection.
  • If the TV only offers to connect a cable or a Wi-Fi dongle and shows no Wi-Fi networks, the model has no built-in Wi-Fi: use a cable or LG's USB receiver.

When to contact support

If error 106 is still there after restarting, changing the DNS and trying the other Wi-Fi band, LG's advice is to contact an LG service centre, because the Wi-Fi module may need replacing:

  • Have your TV's model number ready and check its Wi-Fi specs on LG's official site.
  • Tell them which steps you already tried: router and TV restart, DNS 8.8.8.8, band and channel change.
  • Mention whether other devices have internet on the same Wi-Fi.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fix LG TV error code 106?+

Check that other devices have internet, then restart the router and the TV and re-enter the Wi-Fi password if asked. If that fails, set the DNS to 8.8.8.8 under Settings → Network → Wi-Fi Connection → Advanced Settings → Edit, then try the other Wi-Fi band.

LG TV error code 106 wifi: should I use 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?+

LG's error-code list ties 106 to the 5 GHz band and says to switch from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz. LG's dedicated 106 article also suggests moving to 5 GHz if your TV supports it, with channel 36, 40, 44 or 48. Try the band your TV isn't on now and restart the router after each change.

What is the difference between LG TV error code 105 and 106?+

Error 106 means the TV is not connected to the network and the internet signal is not reaching it. Error 105 appears when there is no internet access or the DNS address can't be resolved. For 105, LG says to restart the TV and router first, then set the DNS manually to 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4.

What does LG TV error code 201 mean?+

LG says errors 201 and 501 come with a message that there is no signal. If you do have a signal, LG's fix is to switch from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz; resetting the router's settings is another option LG gives.

Why does my LG TV not see Wi-Fi and show error 106?+

Your model may not have built-in Wi-Fi. Check its specs on LG's official site: "-" next to Wi-Fi means no built-in adapter and "Ready" means it needs LG's external adapter. A Smart TV without a Wi-Fi module goes online by cable, through an extra router (repeater) or with LG's USB Wi-Fi receiver.

Does error 106 mean my LG TV is broken?+

Not by itself. LG describes 106 as a network connection error that you can fix at home with a restart, a DNS change or router settings. Only if none of that helps does LG suggest an LG service centre, because the Wi-Fi module may need replacing.
