Netflix Error NW-4-7: How to Fix It
Error NW-4-7 means Netflix can't connect from your device — usually because stored Netflix data is stale or the home network dropped the connection to Netflix's servers, not because your device is broken.
Quick answer
NW-4-7 is a connection error between your device and Netflix. In most cases restarting the device together with your home network clears the stale data or network glitch behind it.
- 1.Turn the device off, unplug it (and the TV) for 1 minute, then plug it back in and reopen Netflix.
- 2.Unplug your modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect them, wait for the lights to settle, and try Netflix again.
What it means
Error NW-4-7 appears when your device is on your network but can't complete a stable connection to Netflix — either the Netflix data stored on the device has gone stale, or your home network dropped the link to Netflix's servers.
It's usually fixed on the device or network side (a restart, a data refresh, or a DNS change), so it doesn't mean your TV or player is faulty. The one exception is very old hardware Netflix no longer supports.
Common causes
- Stale Netflix data on the device. The sign-in and app data Netflix keeps on the device is out of date and needs to be refreshed before it will reconnect.
- Home network connectivity fault. The device joined your Wi-Fi but couldn't hold a steady connection to Netflix's servers.
- Router or modem inconsistency. The modem or router is handing out a bad or dropped connection and needs a power cycle.
- Custom DNS on game consoles. On PlayStation or Xbox, a manual or custom DNS entry can stop the console from reaching Netflix.
- Device no longer supported. On very old TVs or players, Netflix may have ended support, and NW-4-7 is how that surfaces.
Before you start
- Open another streaming app on the same device — if nothing loads, the problem is your network rather than Netflix.
- Test Netflix on your phone over the same Wi-Fi; if it works there, the fault is on this specific device.
- Note whether the error started right after changing router settings, DNS, or a device update.
Fixes, from safest to last resort
Restart your device
No data loss- 1Turn the device off. If it's a TV or a plug-in streaming stick/box, unplug it from the wall.
- 2On a TV, hold the power button for 5 seconds while it's unplugged to drain residual power.
- 3Wait a full minute, plug it back in, turn it on and reopen Netflix.
A clean restart reloads the Netflix app and re-establishes its connection — it often clears NW-4-7 on its own.
Restart your home network
No data loss- 1Turn the device fully off (don't just close Netflix).
- 2Unplug both your modem and router (or your single gateway) for 30–60 seconds.
- 3Plug the modem back in first, wait for it to come online, then the router, and wait for all lights to stabilise.
- 4Turn the device back on and open Netflix again.
This forces the modem/router to hand your device a fresh connection to Netflix's servers.
Improve your Wi-Fi connection
No data loss- 1Move the device closer to the router, or the router closer to the device, and away from other electronics.
- 2If the device has an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router with a cable for a rock-solid link.
- 3Retry Netflix once the connection is stronger.
A weak or fluctuating signal can complete a network join yet still fail the connection to Netflix.
Sign out of Netflix and back in
Re-setup needed- 1In the Netflix app, open the left-hand menu or your profile, then Get Help (or Settings) → Sign Out and confirm.
- 2If you can't reach that menu, from the Netflix screen press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up to open the hidden menu, then choose Sign Out, Reset or Deactivate.
- 3Sign back in with your Netflix email and password and try again.
Signing out clears the stale sign-in data on the device — a common non-network cause of NW-4-7.
Check or reset the DNS settings
Re-setup needed- 1On PlayStation: Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection → Custom → DNS Settings → Automatic.
- 2On Xbox: Settings → General → Network settings → Advanced settings → DNS settings → Automatic.
- 3On a smart TV, open the network settings, choose to enter DNS manually and set it to 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS).
- 4Save and reopen Netflix.
Consoles should use Automatic DNS; on a TV whose ISP DNS can't reach Netflix, 8.8.8.8 (secondary 8.8.4.4) bypasses it.
8.8.8.8Factory reset the device (last resort)
Removes apps & settings- 1Only after every step above has failed and other apps or devices still can't reach Netflix on this hardware.
- 2Open the device's Settings and find the reset option (on a smart TV, Settings → General/System → Reset, PIN often 0000).
- 3Set the device up again, reconnect to your network and sign in to Netflix.
⚠ A factory reset erases your apps, logins and preferences. Try everything else first — and if the device is simply too old for Netflix, a reset won't help; use a newer device.
If a menu doesn't match your TV
- The sign-out path varies by device: some TVs and players hide it under Get Help, others only expose it through the Up-Up-Down-Down key sequence.
- DNS menus differ by brand — on smart TVs the option may sit under Network Status, IP Settings or Advanced, and some consoles label it Primary/Secondary DNS.
When to contact support
Contact Netflix support if NW-4-7 stays after restarting, signing out and checking DNS, or if only Netflix fails while every other app works:
- Tell them your exact device type and model, and that you already restarted, signed out and reset DNS.
- Ask whether your device is still supported by Netflix — very old models are sometimes retired.
- Ask them to check for a known service issue affecting your account or region.

Frequently asked questions
Does error NW-4-7 mean my device is broken?+
Almost never. It's a connection error between your device and Netflix, so it's fixed with a restart, a Netflix sign-out, or a DNS change. The only hardware-related case is a very old device Netflix no longer supports.
Why does NW-4-7 happen only on Netflix and not other apps?+
NW-4-7 is specific to the link between your device and Netflix's servers. Stale Netflix data or a DNS setting can block that one connection while other apps, which use different servers, keep working.
Will signing out delete my Netflix profiles or history?+
No. Signing out on the device only clears the stored session on that device. Your account, profiles, watch history and My List live on Netflix's servers and come back when you sign in again.
