Roku Error Code 003: Fix a Failed Software Update
Error 003 means your Roku couldn't finish downloading a software update — it's a connection problem between the player and Roku's update servers, not a damaged device.
Quick answer
Error 003 is a failed software-update download. In most cases restarting the Roku and rebooting your router lets the update finish on the next try.
- 1.Go to Settings → System → System restart (on a Roku TV: Settings → System → Power → System restart).
- 2.Unplug your router for 60 seconds, plug it back in, then retry: Settings → System → System update → Check now.
What it means
Error 003 appears when your Roku started a software update but couldn't download it fully from Roku's update servers, so the update stops partway and the device shows the code.
It's a network-side problem — a weak signal, a router that needs a reboot, or Roku's servers being briefly busy — so the fix is about steadying the connection and retrying, not repairing the player.
Common causes
- Weak or unstable Wi-Fi. The most common cause: the signal between the Roku and the router drops or is too slow, so the update download never completes.
- Router or modem needs a restart. The router has been up too long and its connection stalled; a reboot clears it and lets the download through.
- Roku update servers busy or unreachable. Roku's servers can be temporarily overloaded (common right after a new release), so the download fails and you just need to retry later.
- Connected to the wrong network. The Roku is joined to a guest, extender, or neighbouring Wi-Fi that has no real internet or blocks the update servers.
Before you start
- Test another device (phone, laptop) on the same Wi-Fi — if it also struggles to load pages, the problem is your router or internet, not the Roku.
- Check the signal strength on the Roku at Settings → Network → About; if it shows Fair or Poor, that alone can cause 003.
- Note whether 003 appeared right after Roku released a new OS version — servers are busiest then, and a retry in an hour often just works.
Fixes, from safest to last resort
Restart the Roku
No data loss- 1Open Settings → System → System restart and select Restart (on a Roku TV the path is Settings → System → Power → System restart).
- 2If the menu won't open, unplug the Roku (or Roku TV) from power for 15 seconds and plug it back in.
- 3When it boots, try the update again: Settings → System → System update → Check now.
A clean restart re-initialises the network stack and clears the half-finished download — it often resolves 003 on its own.
Reboot your router and modem
No data loss- 1Unplug both the router and the modem from power.
- 2Wait a full 60 seconds so they fully reset.
- 3Plug the modem back in first, wait for its lights to stabilise, then power the router back on.
- 4Once the network is up, retry from Settings → System → System update → Check now on the Roku.
Check the connection, then retry the update
No data loss- 1Go to Settings → Network → Check connection and let the Roku test the link to the internet and its servers.
- 2If the check passes, go straight to Settings → System → System update → Check now to download the update again.
- 3If it fails, note which step it fails on (router, internet, or Roku servers) — that tells you which fix below to use.
Roku's server-side load eases quickly, so simply re-running Check now a couple of times clears a lot of 003 errors.
Reconnect to the right Wi-Fi network
Re-setup needed- 1Go to Settings → Network → Set up connection → Wireless.
- 2Pick your main home network — not a guest network or a range-extender SSID — and enter the password.
- 3Prefer the 5 GHz band if your router offers a separate one and the Roku is close by; use 2.4 GHz if it's far away.
- 4After it connects, retry Settings → System → System update → Check now.
Reconnecting only changes the saved Wi-Fi; your channels, accounts and installed apps are untouched.
Strengthen the signal or set a public DNS on your router
Re-setup needed- 1Move the Roku closer to the router, or remove obstacles/microwaves between them; on a model with an Ethernet port (Ultra, some Roku TVs), plug in a wired cable to rule Wi-Fi out entirely.
- 2If the connection is fine but the download still stalls, open your router's admin page and change its DNS servers to Google DNS.
- 3Set the primary DNS to 8.8.8.8 and the secondary to 8.8.4.4, save, then restart the Roku and retry the update.
Roku has no on-device DNS field, so DNS must be changed on the router — this helps when your provider's DNS can't reach Roku's update servers.
8.8.8.8Factory reset the Roku (last resort)
Removes apps & settings- 1Only do this if every step above failed and other devices on the same network have working internet.
- 2Go to Settings → System → Advanced system settings → Factory reset and follow the on-screen code prompt.
- 3If the menu is unreachable, hold the physical Reset button on the device for about 10 seconds until the indicator flashes.
- 4Set the Roku up again, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and let it install the update during first-time setup.
⚠ A factory reset erases all channels, logins, and preferences and unlinks the device from your Roku account. Try everything else first.
If a menu doesn't match your TV
- On Roku streaming players the restart path is Settings → System → System restart, but on Roku TVs it lives under Settings → System → Power → System restart.
- Older Roku OS versions may label the update option 'Software update' instead of 'System update'; it's still under Settings → System.
When to contact support
Contact Roku support if 003 keeps returning after a router reboot and factory reset while other devices update normally on the same network:
- Have your model and serial ready (Settings → System → About).
- Tell them the exact step Check connection fails on and which fixes you already tried.
- Ask whether there's a known update-server issue for your region or a firmware push for your model.

Frequently asked questions
Does error 003 mean my Roku is broken?+
No. It's a failed software-update download caused by the network or Roku's servers, so it's fixed on the connection side — a restart, router reboot, or retry — not by repairing the device.
Why does error 003 happen right after a Roku update is released?+
When Roku pushes a new OS version, its update servers get flooded with downloads at once. The download can time out and show 003. Waiting an hour and re-running Check now usually clears it.
Will fixing error 003 delete my channels or logins?+
Restarting, rebooting the router, and reconnecting Wi-Fi keep everything. Only a factory reset removes your channels, accounts, and settings, so keep it as the final step.
