Is Your TV Remote Infrared, Bluetooth or Both? 3 Tests
Most guides treat the phone-camera test as a yes-or-no answer. On modern smart TVs the honest answer has three outcomes, and the middle one — a remote that is infrared and Bluetooth at the same time — is the one a yes-or-no test cannot describe.

Point the remote at a phone camera and press buttons. If every button produces a flash, it is infrared. If no button flashes yet the TV still obeys, it is Bluetooth or another radio link. If only power and volume flash while navigation and voice keep working, you have a hybrid remote — a common arrangement on smart TVs that use a paired remote, and not a fault. Infrared, Bluetooth and hybrid, defined once
A remote is infrared if it sends commands as pulses of invisible light that need a clear path to the TV's sensor; it is Bluetooth (or another radio protocol) if it sends them as radio waves to a receiver it has been paired with; and it is hybrid if it does both at the same time — radio for most functions, infrared for a small handful.
The infrared side is easy to recognise from behaviour. Roku describes its simple remotes as sending invisible infrared light a short distance to the front of the device, and states plainly that the remote has to be pointed at it with nothing blocking the signal. That is the whole personality of IR: line of sight, short range, no setup, no pairing, no memory of which TV it belongs to.
The radio side behaves in the opposite way. It has to be paired once, it works around furniture and from another angle in the room, and it is the only practical option when a remote carries a microphone, a motion pointer or a scroll wheel, because those need a continuous two-way data link rather than a one-way burst of light.
The hybrid is where most people get confused, because it is rarely described anywhere. Apple documents its Apple TV remote as using Bluetooth to talk to the Apple TV itself and infrared to control the volume on a television or receiver. Sony's own remote-testing article puts it even more bluntly: some Bluetooth remotes only send an infrared signal from the power button. Run all three. Any one of them on its own can point you at the wrong conclusion. Run all three and compare the results before deciding.

Rule out flat batteries first
Fit batteries you know are good before testing anything. Sony's guidance notes that if no light appears in the camera when you press a button, spent batteries are one of the possible explanations — and a dead remote produces exactly the same 'nothing flashes' result as a Bluetooth-only remote.

Test 1 — the phone camera test, on every button group
Open the camera app, switch to the rear camera, and aim the front tip of the remote at the lens from a few centimetres away. Now press buttons deliberately, one group at a time: power, volume, channel or playback, the direction pad, the home or menu key, and the voice key if there is one. Watch the screen for a pale violet or white flicker. What matters here is not whether a flash appears, but which buttons produce one.

Test 2 — cover the emitter
Press a fingertip, or a piece of opaque tape, firmly over the dark window at the tip of the remote so no light can escape. Point it at the TV as normal and press the same buttons again. Anything that still works is probably not travelling by infrared. Use opaque tape rather than a fingertip, and check the tip for more than one emitter window before concluding.

Test 3 — break the line of sight
Turn your back to the television, or step behind a wall or a piece of furniture that the TV's sensor cannot see through, and press the same buttons once more. Infrared commands will stop arriving. Radio commands will not care. Do not use a sofa cushion or a thin panel for this — infrared bounces off walls and ceilings surprisingly well, so a half-hearted obstruction can give you a false pass.

Read the three results together
Compare the button-by-button outcome of all three tests against the matrix below. If the same subset of buttons behaves as infrared in every test, that subset is your remote's IR half, and everything else is running over radio.
If the camera shows nothing at all, test the camera before you condemn the remote
Sony's support article warns that some mobile phones, and certain iPhone models, have a filter over the built-in camera that removes infrared light — so the emitter can be working perfectly and still look dead on screen.
Always use the rear camera rather than the selfie camera, and if you get a blank result, repeat it on a different phone or a tablet before recording a verdict. A known-good infrared remote from another device makes a useful control: if that one does not flash either, the problem is your camera, not the remote.

A remote that fails every test in every position has not told you its protocol — it has told you it is not transmitting. That is a different question, and a different guide.
Why 'only power and volume flash' is the normal result, not a defect
A camera test is usually presented as having two outcomes. It has three, and the partial result is the one that fits a remote carrying both channels.
The reason is that infrared solves a problem radio cannot. A Bluetooth link only exists after a pairing handshake has succeeded, and a pairing can be missing for entirely ordinary reasons: the TV is brand new, the remote is a replacement, someone ran a factory reset, or the batteries were out long enough for the connection to be dropped. The practical effect of keeping a small infrared channel alive is that a handful of critical commands still land when the radio link does not exist yet.
You can see that logic in the setup instructions themselves. Samsung's support page for connecting a Smart Remote tells you to point the remote at the TV's remote-control sensor while you run the pairing routine — an aiming requirement that only makes sense for light, even though the finished connection is Bluetooth.
The second reason is that infrared is the only universal language between devices that were never introduced to each other. A streaming remote paired to a streaming box still has to turn a television on and change its volume, and that television belongs to a different manufacturer with no shared pairing scheme. Apple's documentation for its remote describes exactly this split, including a volume-control setting that drives the TV over infrared.
So the partition follows a recognisable pattern where it appears: power and volume on infrared, everything that needs data — navigation, voice, pointer, app shortcuts, on-screen keyboard — on radio. A remote where only two buttons light up in a camera is not half-broken. It is doing both jobs correctly.
Reading the remote before you test it
Physical features narrow the answer down in seconds, but none of them close the case on their own — they tell you a radio link exists, not whether infrared exists alongside it.

Mistakes that produce a false verdict
Each of these turns a correct test into a wrong answer, and all of them are common.
- Using the selfie camera. Front-facing cameras can filter infrared out entirely, which reads as 'no emitter' on a remote that has one.
- Pressing only the power button. On a hybrid, power is the button most likely to be infrared — so a single flash proves the remote has an emitter, and proves nothing about the rest of the buttons.
- Pressing only a navigation key. The mirror image of the same mistake: no flash from the direction pad on a hybrid is expected, and does not make the remote Bluetooth-only.
- Testing with weak batteries. A fading emitter can be too dim for a phone sensor to pick up while the radio side still works, which fakes a Bluetooth-only result.
- Testing with the TV fully powered down at the wall. A radio remote has nothing to talk to, so every radio function looks dead and the remote reads as infrared-only.
- Judging the line-of-sight test from behind a thin obstruction. Infrared reflects off pale walls and ceilings well enough to reach the sensor indirectly. Put a solid barrier or a real corner between you and the screen.
- Treating a hybrid as a fault and starting a repair. Nothing here needs fixing — you are identifying a protocol, not diagnosing a failure.
Confirm the verdict before you act on it
Every button group was tested, not just power
Power, volume, channel or playback, direction pad, home or menu, and voice if present. Note which ones flashed.
The camera itself was verified
Rear camera, and a second device or a known-working infrared remote used as a control if the first attempt showed nothing.
Batteries are known-good
Fresh cells, correct orientation, clean contacts. A weak emitter and a missing emitter look identical on screen.
All three test results were compared
Camera, covered emitter and broken line of sight should point at the same verdict. If they disagree, repeat the line-of-sight test with a solid barrier; if they still disagree, the remote may be faulty rather than tied to a particular protocol — that is a different diagnosis.

Signs your conclusion will not survive contact with a replacement remote
Once you know the protocol, these are the signals that a substitute remote will only do part of the job.
- The original has a microphone or assistant button. A universal infrared remote cannot reproduce voice functions, because voice is not carried on the infrared channel at all.
