Vertical Lines on TV: T-Con Board, Ribbon or Dead Panel
The same symptom has three very different endings: a board you can replace, a cable you can reseat, or a panel that is finished. Here is how to tell which one you are looking at before you spend anything.

What a vertical line is actually telling you
A vertical line means a column of the panel has stopped receiving correct data — or has stopped receiving data at all. Everything above and below it still works, which is why the fault looks so surgical and so alarming at the same time.
The signal path behind that column is short. Video reaches the main board, the main board sends it to the timing controller (usually called the T-Con), the T-Con converts it into the row and column addressing the glass understands, and that addressing travels down fine flat cables and bonded driver chips to the edge of the panel. Three physical stages, three possible culprits.
Here is the part most repair content leaves out: those three culprits are not equally profitable to talk about. A T-Con board is a part with a stock number, a price and a seller. A dead panel is not. That asymmetry is why almost every result you read blames the T-Con by default, regardless of what the picture actually looks like.
We have no parts to sell, so we can say the uncomfortable thing plainly: when the pattern is thin, fixed lines, the origin points at the panel itself, and a panel fault on a modern TV is rarely economical to repair. Reading the pattern first is what stops you from buying a board that will change nothing.

Visual pattern vs probable origin
Start here. The shape, width and behaviour of the defect narrows the cause more reliably than any single measurement you could take.

Thin plus fixed leans panel. Wide plus block-shaped leans board. Changing or intermittent leans connection. Those three tendencies carry most of the diagnostic weight.
Four checks that change the verdict
None of these checks costs anything, and each one narrows the probable origin before you open or buy anything.

The built-in picture test adds something the other checks cannot, because it renders a reference image generated inside the TV without passing through any external source. Where it lives varies by brand — look under support, self-diagnosis or device care in the settings menu.
The three suspects, and why only one of them gets sold to you
Once the pattern is read and the free checks are done, you are choosing between three components with very different economics.
The T-Con board
The timing controller sits between the main board and the panel. It takes the processed video and turns it into the timing and addressing the glass needs. When it fails partially, the damage tends to be structural rather than delicate: wide bands, blocks of wrong colour, half the screen behaving differently from the other half, a negative-looking image, or geometry that is broadly wrong rather than one column being wrong.
That is the honest profile of a T-Con fault. It is not hairline lines. If someone tells you a single pixel-wide line is a T-Con problem, ask why the rest of the screen — driven by the same controller — is perfect.
To identify the board you would need, the reference is printed on the board itself, usually silkscreened onto the PCB and repeated on a sticker. There is also a panel label on the back of the panel chassis. Both strings matter, and both are model-specific: never work from a number quoted for a similar set or a similar screen size. Board revisions within the same base number are not always interchangeable, and a compatible-looking part with a different suffix can behave differently or not at all.
We do not publish part numbers here for exactly that reason. The correct number is the one physically on your hardware, and nothing else is safe to assume.
The ribbon cables and the bonded drivers
Two different things get called "the ribbon", and they deserve very different expectations.
The first is the flat cable running from the main board to the T-Con, and from the T-Con onward. These sit in connectors. They can work loose, oxidise, or lose contact after years of heating and cooling. Reseating one is a genuine possibility, and it is the reason intermittent or heat-sensitive faults are worth investigating rather than writing off.
The second is the array of very fine tape cables carrying the driver chips along the edge of the glass. These are not plugged in. They are bonded to the panel during manufacture, at a pitch far finer than anything hand tools can address. When one of these bonds fails, you get thin lines or a narrow group of them — and there is no connector to reseat. Specialist equipment for redoing that bonding exists, but the service is uncommon. If you find someone who offers it, ask for a written quote and compare it with the cost of replacing the television before accepting.
If your fault changes when the set is moved or handled, it is telling you it is mechanical. That is useful information, but do not go looking for it by pressing on the screen: pressure on a panel can turn a repairable connection fault into permanent damage in one motion.
The panel — the answer nobody has an incentive to give you
If the lines are thin, fixed, present over the TV's own menu, unchanged by power cycling and unchanged by temperature, the most likely explanation is the panel's own driver circuitry or its bonding. On modern televisions this is effectively the end of the road.
The reason is not technical mystery, it is arithmetic. A replacement panel is not a cheap part, and its availability to independent repairers varies by brand and region. Before deciding anything, ask a repair service for a written quote covering panel plus labour and compare it against the price of an equivalent television today — that is the only figure that applies to your case. Check your manufacturer's support pages for your model and region: that is where it states whether panel work is offered at all outside warranty.
A related case worth naming: if a vertical line radiates from a point of impact, or is accompanied by a spreading dark blot or a spider pattern, that is physical panel damage. No board change corrects that. Physical panel damage is normally excluded from the manufacturer's warranty, but check your own cover before writing it off — an extended warranty or a home insurance policy may treat it differently.
None of this is a reason to give up before the free checks. It is a reason to do the free checks before spending.
Before you buy a replacement board
Confirm the fault is board-shaped
Wide bands, blocks, half-screen behaviour or broadly wrong geometry. If the defect is hairline and static, a board is unlikely to address it.
Confirm it appears over the TV's own menu
If it only appears on external sources, the problem is not inside the panel chain and no board purchase is justified yet.
Read the reference from your own hardware

Price the whole job, not the part
Add labour if you are not doing it yourself, plus the risk of damaging a working panel during disassembly. Compare that total against a replacement set.

Will replacing the T-Con board remove vertical lines?+
It depends entirely on the pattern. If you are seeing wide colour bands, block-shaped defects or one half of the screen behaving differently, a T-Con is a plausible suspect and a swap is a reasonable thing to try. If you are seeing thin, fixed, hairline lines, the same controller is driving the rest of the screen correctly, which makes it an unlikely cause. In that case a new board frequently changes nothing.
Why do the lines appear over the TV's own menu?+
Because the menu is generated inside the television, after the input stage. If a defect appears over it, the fault must sit further down the chain — in the T-Con, in the cabling to the panel, or in the panel itself. The lines come and go. Does that mean it is not serious?+

Does a factory reset or firmware update fix vertical lines?+
Not if the cause is physical, which it usually is when the lines are visible over the TV's own menus. A reset is still worth doing because it is free and it rules out the rare case of a processing glitch. Treat it as an elimination step, not a repair, and be aware that a reset will clear your accounts and settings.
