Plex works differently from other streaming apps: the TV app is a client that plays media from your own Plex Media Server, alongside Plex's free ad-supported streaming. That is why most Plex problems on TVs are connection issues between the app and the server rather than faults in the app itself.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Plex Pass to watch Plex on my TV?+

Not for local streaming: playing your personal media on the same network as your Plex Media Server is free, and Plex's free ad-supported streaming doesn't need a subscription either. Remote playback of personal media — watching away from the server's network — now requires a Plex Pass on the server or a Remote Watch Pass subscription.

Why can't the Plex app on my TV find my server?+

Plex's support docs point to the network layout first: the TV and the server must be on the same subnet, and router features that block DNS rebinding or local discovery can hide the server from the app. Also check the server's "Secure connections" setting — Preferred is safer than Required if the TV app struggles to connect securely.
