Will Your Wall Hold the TV? Anchors by Wall Type
TV mounting guides written for timber-framed housing tell you to find the stud. In most of the world there is no stud — there is brick, block or concrete, and the real question is whether it's solid or hollow. This is how to tell, and what to anchor into once you know.
Quick answer
Start with the wall, not the TV. Work out whether you have solid masonry, hollow or perforated brick, concrete, plasterboard over studs, or plasterboard with nothing solid behind it. Each one takes a different anchor family, and the last two usually need reinforcement or a professional. Then let the lowest published rating among wall, anchor and mount govern the whole install.

⚠ Electrical safety warning
- A television falling from a wall is a serious injury risk, especially to children. Failures are often silent and delayed — an under-specified anchor can hold for a time before giving way, with no warning beforehand.
- Always scan for live electrical cables and water or gas pipes before drilling, and check above and below the mount area as well as within it. In masonry construction, services are routed through chases that are invisible from the surface. Detectors are not infallible — they can miss de-energised cables, plastic pipes and deeply buried runs — so switch off the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
- Do not use hollow-wall plugs, generic plastic plugs or picture-hanging hardware for a television, on any wall type.
- Never load a mount installed with a chemical or resin anchor before the curing time stated in that product's instructions has fully elapsed.
- If an anchor spins instead of tightening, or material crumbles out of the hole, stop. Do not keep tightening and do not substitute a longer screw — the base material is not sound.
- Do not exceed the tightening torque specified for the anchor. Overtightening crushes the surrounding material and reduces holding capacity rather than increasing it.
- Hollow brick, hollow block, metal-stud walls, plasterboard without reliable backing, and any wall you cannot confidently identify all warrant a qualified installer. Vogel's recommends professional installation for hollow walls, hollow brick and timber panelling.
- Stop immediately if you strike rebar in concrete, or if drilling behaves in a way you did not anticipate.
"Find the stud" is a North American assumption
Search for how to mount a TV and you will get the same instruction over and over: locate the timber stud, drive lag bolts into it, done. That advice is written for a housing stock built from wood framing behind plasterboard. It is excellent advice — in that housing stock.
In Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Indonesia, Vietnam, much of the Arab world and southern Europe generally, there is often no stud to find. Interior partitions are hollow clay brick, and structural walls are solid brick, concrete block or reinforced concrete. A stud finder in those rooms either reads nothing useful or reads a dense zone that is not a beam you can bolt into.
So the first question is not "where is the stud". It is: is this wall solid or hollow, and what is it made of? Get that wrong and everything downstream is wrong, because an anchor is not rated for "a wall" — it is rated separately for solid brick, perforated brick, concrete, aerated block and plasterboard, and those figures are not interchangeable.
This guide is about the wall. Two related questions live elsewhere: which hole pattern your TV uses is a VESA question, and how long the screws into the back of the TV should be is a screw-length question. Neither of those affects whether the wall holds.
Work out what your wall is actually made of
Knock along the wall, in several places
A dull, dead thud that sounds the same everywhere usually means solid masonry or concrete. A drum-like echo means there is a cavity behind — either a hollow brick, a hollow block, or plasterboard over a frame. Knock in at least four or five spots, because a hollow-brick partition and a plasterboard partition can sound similar.
Look at what comes out of a test hole
Drill one small pilot hole somewhere that will be hidden behind the mount plate. Red or orange dust means clay brick. Grey, gritty, hard-won dust means concrete or cement block. White or light grey powder that comes easily means plaster or plasterboard. Fine white dust that stops after a centimetre or two, then the bit drops into air, means a plasterboard skin with a cavity.
Feel how the drill behaves
On solid brick or concrete the bit works continuously and slowly. On perforated brick it alternates: resistance, then a sudden free-spin as it breaks into a void, then resistance again on the next internal web. If the bit alternates between resistance and free-spin, that is an indication you are in hollow brick. It is an indication, not a confirmation: check it against the other signs, and if you are unsure, do not continue.
Check for a plasterboard skin glued onto masonry
Some rooms have plasterboard bonded directly to a masonry wall with adhesive dabs. The surface sounds hollow, but there is real brick a few centimetres behind it. This changes the anchor completely, and it means any fixing has to reach past the board into the masonry rather than grip the board.
Scan for cables and pipes before you drill anything
Use a detector rated for live cables and metal pipes, and check both the mount area and directly above and below it. In masonry construction, chases for wiring and plumbing are routed through walls in ways that are not visible from the surface. This step is not optional. Detectors are not infallible: they can miss de-energised cables, plastic pipes and services buried deep in the wall. Switch off the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and if you suspect a chase runs through the area, do not drill — move the mount position or consult a professional.
Wall type, suitability, anchor family and safety margin
Use this as the decision table. "Anchor family" means the category to look for on the packaging and datasheet — not a specific product, because the load figures that matter are always printed for the exact anchor you buy in the exact base material you have.

Two rows deserve extra attention in masonry-built housing: hollow brick and plasterboard with nothing behind it. Both need an anchor strategy that stud-based advice does not address.
Hollow brick is the case the English-language internet ignores
Perforated clay brick is not weak. It is just not solid, and an anchor that works by pressing outward against continuous material has almost nothing to press against. It expands into a void, catches the edge of one thin internal web, and holds until the day someone leans on the screen or tilts the arm.
The engineered answer for this material is a chemical anchor used with an injection sleeve. The sleeve sits in the drill hole and holds the resin in place so it does not simply pour into the cavities; when the threaded rod goes in, the resin is pushed out through the sleeve's mesh and forms a mechanical interlock with the brick's internal structure. fischer builds and documents exactly this system for perforated brick masonry, and it is worth understanding the principle even if you end up hiring the work out.
The practical consequence: a bag of generic plastic wall plugs is not a hollow-brick solution, no matter how many of them you use. And drilling hollow brick with hammer action can shatter the internal webs you are counting on. The installation instructions for the anchor you buy state the drilling mode permitted in perforated brick; follow that sheet rather than inferring it from how the bit behaves.
Plasterboard with no stud: the answer is reinforcement, not a cleverer plug
Plasterboard is a facing material. It is not designed to carry a cantilevered load hanging off its face, and no anchor changes that — the anchor may be strong, but the board around it is the weak link.
There are two honest paths. If the board is glued onto a masonry wall, the fixing has to pass through the board and anchor properly in the masonry behind, which means confirming that the masonry is actually there and is actually solid. If the board covers a genuine cavity, the fix is to put something structural in that cavity: timber noggins between studs, or a backing panel fixed to the studs, with the mount then bolted to the panel. The panel thickness, the fixings and the number of studs it has to span depend on the weight and the mount, so that is a specification for whoever assesses the wall rather than a generic figure.
Anything else is a plug rated for a picture frame being asked to hold a television.
Where the real weight numbers come from
There are three published figures, and none of them come from a rule of thumb on a forum. Every credible number lives in a document you can go and read.
The first is your television's weight, and specifically its weight without the stand — that is the figure the mount has to carry. You find it by reading the model number from the label on the back of the TV or from the settings menu, then pulling the specification sheet or manual from the manufacturer's support site. Do not estimate it from the screen size. Two televisions of the same diagonal can differ substantially in mass depending on panel technology, backlight design and chassis construction, so a number someone quotes for "a 65-inch TV" tells you nothing reliable about yours.
The second is the mount's maximum load, printed in its manual alongside its VESA range and, importantly, the wall types the manufacturer approves it for. Mount manuals often qualify their rating by substrate, and many state outright that supplied fixings are for one specific wall type only.
The third is the anchor's load capacity, which the anchor manufacturer publishes per base material. The same anchor will have different lines for concrete, solid brick, perforated brick and aerated block. Read the line that matches your wall, not the headline number on the front of the packet.
The rule that resolves all the contradictory advice is simple: the governing capacity is the lowest of the three, and it applies to the whole installation. A mount rated generously and a TV well under that rating mean nothing if the anchors are working in a material they were never tested in. Treat published figures as ceilings that assume correct installation in sound material — not as targets to design toward.
What quietly eats into your real margin
Two installations with identical televisions and identical mounts can put very different loads on the same anchors. These are the factors that change the arithmetic.

Mistakes that cause a mount to pull out
None of these are exotic. They are the ordinary shortcuts that turn a sound wall into a failed one.
- Using the fixings that came in the box without checking which wall type they were supplied for. Boxed hardware is commonly specified for one substrate, and it is frequently the wrong one for masonry construction.
- Drilling hollow brick with hammer action, which can break the thin internal webs the anchor needs to grip.
- Assuming that because a hole was hard to drill, the material is solid all the way through. Perforated brick has a hard outer face and voids behind it.
- Reusing an old hole from a previous mount, shelf or bracket. The material around a used hole is already disturbed and no longer matches the anchor's tested conditions.
- Oversizing the drill bit, or wobbling the drill and enlarging the hole. Anchors are rated for a specific hole diameter and a specific fit.
- Leaving drilling dust in the hole. Dust prevents mechanical anchors from seating correctly and interferes with resin bonding.
- Overtightening. Beyond the specified torque you are not making it tighter, you are crushing the material around the anchor or stretching the anchor itself.
- Loading the mount immediately after installing a chemical anchor. Resin systems have a curing time before they may be loaded, stated in their own instructions.
- Mounting a plate that is level and looks perfect, but where one or two anchors landed in a void, mortar or plasterboard. It will look fine right up until it does not.
Signs this wall and anchor combination will not work
The drill breaks into air after a short distance
You are in a cavity or a perforated block. Stop and change the anchor strategy rather than fitting a longer screw.
The anchor spins instead of tightening
It is not gripping. There is nothing behind it, or the hole is oversized, or the surrounding material has crumbled. Do not keep turning it.
Material falls out of the hole, or the hole keeps widening
Degraded brick, weak mortar or old aerated block. The published anchor loads assume sound base material and do not apply here.
You cannot find any anchor rated for your wall type on the datasheet
If the anchor manufacturer does not publish a figure for your base material, treat that as the answer. It has not been tested there.
The mount's manual does not list your wall type as approved
Some mounts are explicitly limited to particular substrates. Fitting it anyway puts you outside every rating you have.
The plate does not sit flush against the wall
A gap means the load is not distributed as designed and the anchors are being levered rather than loaded straight.
The wall is a partition you are not sure is load-bearing or sound
Thin hollow partitions, panelling and boxed-in service walls need someone who can assess them in person.
When to stop and call a professional
A television coming off a wall is a serious injury risk, particularly to children, and it happens without warning after a period of apparently fine service.
Get a qualified installer if you have hollow brick or hollow block, plasterboard with no reliable structure behind it, metal studs, old or degraded masonry, or any wall you cannot confidently identify. An in-person assessment is the only way to know whether that wall will hold.
Also stop if you hit rebar in concrete, if a detector shows cables or pipes in the mount area, or if a hole behaves in a way you did not expect. Guessing at that point is how installations fail.

- Check whether the supplied fixings are rated for your wall type. Assume they may not be, and budget for buying correct anchors separately.
- For perforated brick or hollow block, look specifically for anchors whose datasheet publishes a load figure for that base material — a headline number on the packaging is not enough.
- Check the anchor's minimum edge distance if you are mounting near a corner or the edge of a wall.
- Add up everything the wall will carry, including any adapter plate, soundbar bracket or shelf, not just the television.
- Decide between fixed, tilt and full-motion with the wall in mind — articulating arms multiply load through leverage and demand the most from the anchors.
- If you have a metal-stud or cavity wall, price the reinforcement work as part of the job rather than hoping an anchor will substitute for it.
Signs it will not fit
- The drill bit breaks through into empty space a short distance in — you are in a cavity or perforated block, not solid material.
- The anchor spins freely instead of tightening as you drive it.
- Dust or fragments keep falling out of the hole and the hole widens as you work.
- The anchor manufacturer's datasheet publishes no load figure for your base material.
- Your mount's manual does not list your wall type among the approved substrates.
- The mount plate will not sit flush against the wall surface.
- The mount's fixing hole spacing does not line up with your stud spacing, and there is no spanning rail or backing panel.
- A cable or pipe detector shows services running through the intended mount area.
- The masonry is visibly old, crumbling, previously repaired, or sheds material when drilled.
A visual match does not guarantee compatibility. Check the exact reference printed on your TV or on the original part before ordering anything.

Is a full-motion arm safe on a masonry wall?+
It depends on the masonry and the anchors, but articulating arms are the most demanding case because extending the arm converts the TV's weight into leverage and increases pull-out force on the upper anchors. On any wall you are not confident about, a fixed or tilt-only mount is the more conservative choice. If you want articulation, that is precisely the install that needs sound, solid material and a properly rated anchor.
